Mikelle, Kimberly Mikelle Morgan, R&B Hip Hop soul singer,
songwriter, arranger and producer was born breech and
pre-mature on the 23rd day of January at Oakland California's
Kaiser Permanente Hospital. She came into the world just
kicking and screaming. There was no doubt she would be kicking
down doors and screaming her way through life in the world of
music. Mikelle grew up in a loving middle class home; the only
child of a single mother. With dreams of becoming a star,
Mikelle would sing and dance in front of the mirror and perform live
in front of her family and friends when they came to visit. At
age seven, Mikelle was asked to perform as the feature soloist for
a local fashion show. The crowd thoroughly adored her. She had
such incredible stage presence and a strong singing voice for such a tiny little girl. This
was the beginning of many events to follow. Mikelle spent much of her life writing music,
performing lead and background singing. When Mikelle reached the age of twelve, she
recorded her first solo demo in a 24-track Studio with producer Jaee Logan. It wasn't very
long before she had her own pre-production studio which allowed her the opportunity to
practice at home. Not knowing what lay ahead, she continued writing songs and recording
her own music using her small home recording unit. One day, while hanging out with
friends, Mac-Mone and Money B introduced Mikelle to Shock G of Digital Underground.
He needed some singing done on a song he was recording at Starlight Studio. He asked
her to repeat the line he sang to her. Being the "quick study" artist that she is, Mikelle was
hired on the spot and they laid that track. Following that, he called on Mikelle many times
whenever he needed her vocals. Touring with Digital Underground as a background
singer, Mikelle felt right at home on stage in front of more than twenty thousand people.
The final performance for that tour was at radio106 KMEL's Summer Jam concert in 1996.
She now had to get ready to do her own thing, because there were still bills and dues to
pay. So Mikelle began working as an assistant to Digital Underground's manager,
Atron Gregory, who started his own label and opened the studio, TNT Recordings.
Quickly, Mikelle began learning more about the business side of entertainment. After
a break from doing session work, Mikelle was now beginning to feel homesick; she
wanted to get back into the studio to begin singing again. That's when, in 1998, Mikelle
met producer K-Lou at his studio in Richmond CA through a mutual friend and producer,
Steve Dee. She began to work exclusively with K-Lou and his artists. While doing
session work and working several different minimum wage jobs, Mikelle began
planning to record an album. In 2002 she decided it was time to start her label and
recording the songs for her album. She collaborated with producer Jaee Logan once
again; this time, to help her to prepare for her 2003 debut release as a solo artist.
They started a band, Software and began rehearsing and playing at local gigs for
exposure. Now, Mikelle, the proud owner of Chassey Entertainment says: " I've always
wanted to be a solo artist, but I just wasn't in the right places at the right times,
so I took matters in my own hands. In the industry, a woman is mostly considered
talent, not brains. Therefore, I'm on a mission to prove that women in this business
are more than just talent, body and beauty. We can do anything we put our mind,
heart, soul, and faith into. If you can dream it, you can achieve it".
